Actopan, Hidalgo, San Nicolás de Tolentino, capilla abierta

With a 57 ft. wide vault, the open-air chapel of San Nicolás de Tolentino is wider than all church vaults in New and Old Spain, expect for that of the cathedral at Gerona, and certainly exceeds the dimensions of San Nicolás itself. It fills the space between the church’s North side and the atrial wall behind. Beneath the colorfully painted coffered aspect to the vault one finds are frescoed scenes from the book of Genesis to either side of where an altar once stood.
