Holy water stoup

Holy water stoup - Santa Ana, high & nave altars
The basilica of Saint Mary of the Angels in Rome may be considered a reference for these unique Oaxacan stoups. Near the entrance to this Roman basilica one also finds fully sculpted angels upholding basins of Holy water. While Michelangelo undertook the design of the complex in 1561, the older of the two stoups is attributed to the school of the great Baroque sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680). Intriguingly, both the Mexican and Italian stoups are likely of similar dates.
