The images which appear here were taken during trips in May, 2012 and July, 2014. Having survived a fire in the 1980s, on March 7, 2021 the entire interior of the parish church of Santiago succumbed to flames. The circumstances were controversial; the event tragic; the loss immeasurable. Nurio preserved what was the greatest of all sotocoros in the phenomenon of 18th century painted church ceilings in Michoacán. Along with its namesake in Tupátaro and that of La Asunción in Naranja de Tapia, Nurio's was the most striking interior of its kind. Its artistic exuberance and allover splendor transcended the temporal, and for two and a half centuries offered its parishioners a glimpse of Heaven on earth. | |
