S portal, cornice relief

This image of St. Nicholas of Tolentino shows the Augustinian with typical attributes: stars in his habit, a bird on a plate in one hand, and a crucifix (now lost) in his other. John McAndrew references both Augustinian chroniclers fray Diego de Basalenque (1577–1651) and fray Juan de Grijalva (circa 1489–1527) in describing an attack on the convento by unconverted Chichimec indigenous:
"In their one attack, the Chichimecas gained the atrio but did not manage to get into the church itself. Supposedly mistaking the statue of St. Nicholas on the upper part of the façade for a living person they shot at it until an arrow lodged in the stone. They were able to do very little harm, as their arrows could not even reach the upper part of the tower, which is not very high, hardly higher than the façade."
