S wall mural detail

Along with Felipe de Jesús, three Spanish Franciscan friars, Pedro Baptista, Martín de la Ascención, and Francisco Blanco, one lay brother also from Spain, Francisco de San Miguel, and Gonsalo García, a friar of the same order from Portuguese India, Gonsalo García, were separated out and placed in the center of the remaining twenty-six to be crucified and lanced.
“The Portuguese, before the crosses had been raised, asked the judge to place the six friars in the middle of the Japanese, putting ten on one side and ten on the other. As this concession was granted, they were nearly all hoisted up together to the cries and tears of the Christians who were witnessing such a sad scene. {...} And four executioners with sharp lances began spearing every last one of them, giving each two or three thrusts to their sides which passed through theirs hearts, the iron tips exiting through their shoulders.”
