Tula de Allende, Hidalgo, mural

A striking mural of St. Helena is found on the second story cloister walk of the Franciscan convento of San José in Tula de Allende, Hidalgo. Crowned and upholding the Cross with Christ's image, Helena is framed between two structures. To her left is what appears to be the Tower of Babel of the Old Testament's book of Genesis, whose construction the Lord curtailed, and on her right elements of a fortified church, perhaps a part of the very walls and battlement of San José Tula. The juxtaposition may be meant to repudiate mankind's hubris in the eyes of God (constructing a tower which would reach the Heavens) while reaffirming the true faith in the shape of the fortress monastery.
