Appearing as the left figure on the top tier of the North wall is Edigio Romano, or
Giles of Rome (
circa 1243-1316) was an influential philosopher and scholar. A student of Thomas Aquinas, Romano wrote extensively on Aristotelian tenets in Paris where he studied and taught. He joined the
Augustinian order, eventually becoming the Archbishop of Bourges, France, in 1295. His most important treatise is
De regimine principum (
circa 1280), a guide to proper royal behavior and governance. Not to be confused with the treatise of the same name by Thomas Aquinas (1265-66), it was eventually published in Augsburg in 1473.
