Gregorio da Rimini, or
Gregory of Rimini (
circa 1300 – 1358) appears as the central figure in the middle tier of the North wall. Born in Rimini, he studied at the University of Paris, then taught in Bologna, Perugia, and Padua where he assimilated the reformist scholasticism of
Franciscan friar and theologian William of Ockham. Gregory is considered one of the great theological thinkers of the Middle Ages, whose teachings influenced the later 16th century
Augustinian faculty at the University of Wittenberg, Germany, and the monastic order and the school of the Protestant Reformer Martin Luther.
